The Secure Cargo course teaches students the knowledge and skills that are required to safely secure cargo. Information taught in the course includes unlashing and lashing cargo, securing containers and cargo, unpacking and packing cargo and protecting the cargo from inclement weather. This course teaches cargo securing information that may be used within the allied, distribution, transport, and stevedoring industries. Students are taught the relevant workplace requirements and regulations surrounding the securing of cargo, and then, students learn to apply those regulations and requirements on the job.
This course will teach students how to properly and safely secure containers and cargo, which includes choosing the appropriate protective clothing, reading and interpreting a lashing plan and the erection of formwork when no lashing points are available. Students will learn how to lash and unlash cargo using important safety codes, statutory requirements, cargo special requirements and industry standards. The course also teaches students to safely uncover and cover cargo, ensuring that no injury to equipment, cargo or personnel occurs. When packing and unpacking cargo, students learn to identify and report any damaged cargo, how to sort and stack cargo and to use numbers or marks to properly identify cargo.
After the successful completion of the Secure Cargo course, students will be provided with a Statement of Attainment for this course. In many cases, this course is an important unit required to achieve other qualifications, such as a Certificate I in Logistics or a Certificate III in Mobile Crane Operations. Completing this course may help students to achieve other important qualifications for improved employability.
Once students have completed the Secure Cargo course, they’ll have the required knowledge to perform cargo securing tasks. Students will understand the procedures for dealing with hazardous situations on the job, they’ll know the cargo numbering and marking systems, and they’ll know the important Australian and international codes, regulations and standards that are relevant to securing freight or cargo. Individuals completing this course will benefit from having the skills to communicate with other individuals when securing freight and cargo. They’ll also have the skills to complete cargo and freight documentation, collaborate with other professionals when securing freight or cargo, and report and deal with any identified malfunctions, faults and problems in accordance with regulatory procedures and requirements.
