The Operate and Maintain a Four Wheel Drive Vehicle course is designed for individuals that require the skills and knowledge to maintain and operate four wheel drive vehicles. The course provides basic through specialist skills and knowledge on four wheel drive vehicle operation. It involves learning specific techniques, terminology and terms for four wheel drive vehicle inspections, vehicle operator maintenance, environmental planning, vehicle recovery, and vehicle operations. Participants in the course must have an unrestricted, current, Class C driver’s license.
Students taking the course will learn how to do pre-start and operational inspections and checks, traffic management procedures on the work site, how to operate communication equipment, and maintenance procedures. The course includes technical information, which includes manufacturer’s manuals that are related to the maintenance and operation of four wheel drive vehicles. Driving techniques are also taught, including specific handling characteristics when driving four wheel drive vehicles in different types of terrain. Other information provided within the Operate and Maintain a Four Wheel Drive Vehicle course includes: travelling in a convey, potential vehicle hazards, area restrictions, how to deal with obstacles, potential vehicle faults, how to jump start a four wheel drive vehicle and training in how to drive in emergency or hazardous situations.
Once students have complete the Operate and Maintain a Four Wheel Drive Vehicle course successfully, they will be provided with a statement of attainment that shows they have successfully completed the course with competency in the subject. The course is specifically beneficial for workers within the infrastructure and resources industry, especially those working on remote and exploration work sites.
