The Drive Medium Rigid Vehicle course provides the essential knowledge and skills that are needed to drive medium rigid vehicles safely. The course includes information on how to efficiently control vehicle functions, manage and identify hazardous situations, maintain vehicle condition, and monitor road conditions and traffic effectively. Students will be taught basic skills, such as how to stop, start, position and steer the medium rigid vehicle while following relevant traffic regulations. Information will also be provided on efficient engine operation, using the brake system effectively and how to manage engine power.
This course also teaches students the appropriate procedures to follow if a driving emergency occurs. They’ll learn how to choose efficient routes by anticipating and monitoring road standards, road conditions and the flow of traffic. Students will also be taught important information on safely operating the medium rigid vehicle to avoid injury to loads, facilities, equipment, property and people. Other information that will be included in this course includes vehicle maintenance, pre-operational inspections, dealing with vehicle malfunctions, updating and maintaining vehicle records, parking basics and driving in reverse.
Students that take the Drive Medium Rigid Vehicle course will be taught the knowledge and skills needed to obtain their license to drive a medium rigid vehicle. Students will also have the benefit of being provide with a statement of attainment for the Drive Medium Rigid Vehicle course, as long as they complete the course successfully. After completion of the course, students can take an assessment with a licensing examination, which will be conducted under or by the appropriate licensing authority
After completing this course, students will benefit from the skills needed to drive a medium rigid vehicle, such as how to read and interpret signs, procedures, information and instructions that are relevant to on the job activities. Students will also have the training needed to operate any electronic communication equipment in the vehicle, how to use proper precautions to control, minimise or prevent hazards. Other skills students will acquire include choosing personal protective equipment, monitoring traffic hazards, checking fluids, and implementing contingency plans when unexpected events occur while driving medium rigid vehicles.
